Every Thursday, I Have Tea with Elias and Miriam
Or at least that's what it feels like.
There comes a point in writing a series when the characters stop asking for permission.
They simply begin living.
When I started writing Roadstand Hollow, I thought I was creating a mystery series. Somewhere along the way, something changed.
Elias and Miriam stopped being fictional characters.
They became friends.
Every Thursday afternoon, in my mind, I find myself sitting at a worn wooden table inside Wishkeeper's Corner. The tea is hot. The fireplace crackles. Outside, the roads into Roadstand Hollow disappear into the mist.
Elias usually arrives first.
Miriam follows a few minutes later, smiling because she already knows something neither Elias nor I have figured out yet.
Then they begin talking.
Not about what should happen.
About what did happen.
I simply listen.
Sometimes Elias insists I got a detail wrong.
Miriam patiently reminds both of us that memories have a way of protecting secrets.
I write as fast as I can.
That's how these books are born.
People often ask writers where stories come from.
The honest answer?
I don't always know.
